Pre-participation screening

The competitive athlete has been described as one who participates in an organized team or individual sport requiring systematic training and regular competition against others while placing a high premium on athletic excellence and achievement. The purpose of screening is to provide medical clearance for participation in competitive sports through routine and systematic evaluations intended to identify clinically relevant and preexisting cardiovascular abnormalities and thereby reduce the risks associated with organized sports.

The sudden death of a competitive athlete is a personal tragedy with great impact on the lay and medical communities. Sudden death in athletes is usually caused by previously unsuspected cardiovascular disease.

Essentials of any evaluation are musculoskeletal, cardiovascular and psychological examinations. Contents of a pre-exercise physical examination should include history, a physical examination, laboratory testing and additional specific screening evaluations.

Finally, assessment of the pre-exercise evaluation and injury prediction will aid physicians in preparticipation evaluations
